Case Study:

Lancaster Park and Ride

Client: Costain
Programme: 14 days

Aesthetics and site security were the key when we (Lowther Forestry Group Ltd) were tasked to design and install a perimeter security system for the new park and ride facility in Lancaster. With over 800m of security barrier system required, the design brief was to provide a cost effective secure perimeter boundary whilst minimizing the visual intrusion onto the landscape.

As part of the new Bay Gateway Project, which links the Heysham peninsula to junction 34 of the M6, we were awarded the contract to deliver a £1m fencing package across the project.

The installation of the perimeter security system around the new park and ride facility for Lancaster was one of the final tasks to be completed on what had been a 5 year contract.

The park and ride facility required high security to protect the vehicles however the budget for the scheme was tight and the timescales to install limited. Through effective planning and negotiation with the main contractor and the fence manufacturer we successfully installed the fencing on time and to budget. The profiled mesh panels that were used were first galvanized and then polyester powder coated in Green RAL 6005 to blend into the surrounding landscape. The results were impressive with high security delivered cost effectively and efficiently.

The 650 space site which opened in January 2017 is seen as a key feature of the Bay Gateway Project and aims to boost Lancaster’s economy by improving access to the city and reducing congestion whist delivering much wider environmental benefits.

The facility which is open 24 hours per day offers a convenient way for commuters to complete their journeys into the city whether that be on one of the regular shuttle buses or via the River Lune cycle way.
