Case Study:

Installation of Timber Boardwalk

Client: Field Studies Council
Programme: 7 Days

In January 2018 Lowther Forestry Group (LFG) installed a new 130m section of raised timber boardwalk to facilitate disabled access at the Field Studies Council’s training center at Castle Head, Lindale.

The construction of the boardwalk has created exceptional disabled access across a sensitive area of wet, marshy grassland that is prone to regular flooding. Tasked with designing an environmentally sustainable boardwalk that would provide longevity whilst being cost effective, LFG opted to utilise the naturally resilient properties of FSC British Redwood timbers to create the boardwalk. All timbers were carefully sourced from sustainably managed UK forests which as building products carry the lowest carbon footprint of any mainstream building material currently on the market – realising negative net CO2 emissions. Sensitively pressure and vacuum treated the timbers carry a desired minimum service life of 15 years.

Our experienced teams worked hard to ensure the boardwalk was completed within the 7 day window that was available to us whilst adhering to stringent working practices which minimised ground disturbance and safeguarded the sensitive nature of the site.
